Your Mission: Architecting Security from the Ground Up
Ready to architect and lead the security program for the future of AI data? As HUD's inaugural full-time Security Engineer, you won't just inherit a program – you'll build it from the ground up. This is a rare opportunity to own and define the entire security posture for a high-growth company operating at the cutting edge of AI.
You'll collaborate closely with our engineering teams to embed security into every layer of our product, cloud infrastructure, complex data workflows, and internal systems. Your leadership will be critical in safeguarding up to billions in data assets, ensuring our infrastructure remains uncompromised and our customer trust is paramount. You'll also spearhead incident response, drive SOC 2 compliance, and cultivate a culture of security across HUD.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Security Leadership: Own HUD’s end-to-end security roadmap, spanning product security, cloud and infrastructure security, corporate security, incident response, and compliance.
Proactive Product & Platform Security: Secure HUD’s APIs, core platform, and data systems through rigorous threat modeling, design and code reviews, robust authentication and authorization controls, and secrets management.
Detection & Incident Response Mastery: Lead the full lifecycle of detection and incident response – from initial signal and alert triage to in-depth investigations, post-mortems, and translating insights into durable security improvements. Build and enhance our monitoring and detection capabilities.
Compliance & Customer Trust Champion: Drive our SOC 2 program and elevate customer trust. This includes designing and implementing controls, responding to security questionnaires, managing policy, overseeing vendor reviews, and leading audits.
Data Governance & Contractual Enforcement: Partner strategically with legal, commercial, engineering, and operations teams to translate complex customer contracts and data-license requirements into enforceable technical and operational controls for data access, provenance, permitted use, retention, deletion, isolation, and auditability.
What You Bring
You may be an exceptional fit if you have:
Robust Security Engineering Fundamentals: Demonstrated hands-on experience across multiple critical security domains, such as infrastructure security, detection and response, identity and access management, and application security.
End-to-End Incident Leadership: Proven experience leading security incidents from initial detection and containment through deep root-cause analysis and driving necessary follow-up engineering work.
Compliance Framework Expertise: Practical experience implementing or operating SOC 2 or a comparable security framework (e.g., ISO 27001, HIPAA), including translating abstract requirements into concrete technical and operational controls.
High Agency & Pragmatic Judgment: The ability to autonomously identify and prioritize critical risks, make sound decisions in ambiguous situations, and personally drive initiatives to completion.
Exceptional Communication Skills: Articulate and persuasive communication for collaborating effectively with founders, engineers, operations, legal teams, auditors, customers, and external partners.
Strong candidates may also bring:
Startup Security Builder: Experience as an early security hire or a track record of building a security program from scratch within a fast-growing startup environment.
Specialized AI/Data Platform Security: Experience securing cutting-edge AI/ML infrastructure, agent execution environments, complex data platforms, developer tools, or other systems that process sensitive data or execute untrusted code.
Data Protection & Licensing Expertise: Direct experience protecting licensed, proprietary, or customer-provided data and operationalizing contractual requirements related to access, use, retention, and deletion.
Community & Contribution: A history of finding CVEs, contributing to open-source security tooling on GitHub, participating in bug bounty programs, delivering conference talks, or publishing insightful blog posts on security topics.
Advanced Certifications: Industry-recognized hands-on certifications such as OSCP, AWS Security Specialist, OSWE, CKS, or GIAC.
We prioritize technical aptitude and learning potential over years of experience. Motivated candidates are encouraged to apply even if they don't meet every criterion.
HUD Culture & Growth
High-Caliber Team: Join a lean, ~25-person team, mostly in-person, including 4 International Olympiad medalists (IOI, ILO, IPhO), serial AI startup founders, and researchers with publications at ICLR, NeurIPS, and other top venues.
